Essential Tips for Buying the Right Size Mountain Bike
![]() |
Before you buy your mountain bike it is important to know what size bike to buy. In order to do this you will need to know two key measurements, your height and your inseam. Out of the two measurements, I’d say your inseam was the most important. The chart to the left shows you which frame to size to buy according to you key measurements. |
Note that bike frame measurements are taken by measuring the distance from the center of the crank up to the top of the frame by the seat tube.
- Stand over the frame with both feet flat on the ground. A good fitting mountain bike should have about 3inch clearance from the frame to your crotch.
- Extend the bike seat so that there is only a slight bend at your knee when sitting on the bike. This will insure maximum power when pedalling. It is a common mistake to think you should be able to sit on the bike with your feet firmly flat on the ground.
- Ensure your mountain bike seat is level. This will help you avoid the mistake of constantly having to think where you are on the seat whilst pedalling. Bad posture will mean that you are not pedalling at maximum efficiency.
- Move the mountain bike saddle back and forth until you are happy that your weight is borne centrally through the bike frame. This will ensure that along with the tips above your pedalling energy will be used as efficiently as possible.
Following these tips will ensure that when you buy your mountain bike you buy not only at a price you can afford but a frame size that will suit you perfectly.
